ADHD Testing and Treatment Recommendations

ADHD Testing includes a complete psychoeducational evaluation. This evaluation is a comprehensive process that involves measures of ability (intelligence), achievement, mental health, visual and auditory attention, developmental history, school history, work history (for adults), medically relevant history, and corroborative observational data from trusted sources. It's not a simple checklist or a single test, but a thorough examination that provides a holistic understanding of the individual's needs.

A psychoeducational evaluation identifies and addresses the underlying factors contributing to difficulties in school, work, or daily life. ADHD testing evaluates issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, vision and hearing difficulties, learning disabilities, and problems with executive functioning. The evaluation provides you with a more holistic perspective on the individual's needs, ensuring they are fully understood and cared for.

While medication may be an essential part of the treatment, a psychoeducational evaluation acknowledges that it is not always the only solution and may even be unnecessary in some cases. By recognizing the various components that can impact attention problems, ADHD testing helps tailor interventions to address these specific needs. For instance, cognitive behavioral treatment can be beneficial for managing depression, anxiety, and sleep issues, while academic interventions specifically target learning difficulties.

By conducting a thorough psychoeducational evaluation, individuals can receive appropriate, personalized interventions that address their unique challenges. This approach empowers individuals by acknowledging the significance of considering multiple factors that may contribute to attention problems, thereby ensuring a more comprehensive and effective treatment plan.

Anxiety: Assessment and Treatment (CBT)

Anxiety is a normal human emotion that everyone experiences. The experience of feeling anxiety serves to help us pay attention to problems that potentially threaten our health, relationships, or well-being. Once the problems are resolved or improved, the feelings of anxiety diminish. Anxiety disorders, however, are different. For people with anxiety disorders, worry and fear can seem constant and overwhelming, interfering with the ability to function in their daily activities. Assessments can provide measures of anxiety from minimal to very severe, which allow us to measure and monitor progress throughout treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a brief intervention that equips clients with specific skills and techniques. Its unique approach lies in emphasizing the interconnectedness of a person's thoughts (cognitions), emotions, and behaviors, and how they mutually influence one another. This link between emotions, thoughts, and behaviors enables therapists to intervene at various points within the cycle.

OCD involves both obsessions and compulsions which cause people to have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations, or behaviors that make them feel driven to do something. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a cutting-edge and evidence-based intervention that uses a combination of talk-therapy and medicine to achieve results which may be difficult to achieve using only medicine or talk therapy alone.

KAP has shown promise as treatment for depression, PTSD, and anxiety. The use of ketamine in this context is off-label, and KAP has not yet been approved by the FDA.

KAP is intensive. Clients generally have one medicine session and one integration session each week for at least four weeks. It requires both medical screening, mental health screenings, preparatory sessions, and follow-up integration sessions. If you'd like to talk to a therapist to see if KAP is right for you please reach out to intake@bsoal.com or 256-883-3231.
